4 No-Mess Indoor Activities Kids Love

One of the challenges of bad weather is engaging kids in fun activities that don’t include a television screen or create a giant mess. To help, we asked moms in Canada (experts in what to do when snowed in!) for their recommendations on indoor activities that are low on clean-up. Here are four of our favorite suggestions.

1. Dance Games “In my ZumbAtomics classes, we play a dance game that everyone adores and it is easy to play at home: Dancing Statues. Put on some dancing tunes. Stop the music and have the kids freeze in position. The first statue buyer (from an exotic location) presses the nose of the statue she/he wishes to see dance. The statue comes to life and dances (turn back on music) until the buyer claps his/her hands and the statue freezes in place again (pause music).  Read more >>

Cookbooks for picky eaters

Your child may prefer to live on chicken fingers and American cheese slices, but you’d feel better if she were eating a more balanced diet. Unfortunately, just because you manage to get all the food groups onto a plate at mealtime doesn’t mean they’re going to make it into the hungry mouth of your little one. If you’ve got a fussy eater, consider one of these kid-tested cookbooks below. Some even offer recipes that your youngster can help you make.

Holiday Child Proofing Tips

There is nothing like a trip to the ER to put a damper on your holiday festivities. Garry Gardner, M.D., chairperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics’s Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention, tells how to childproof the season, one area at a time:

Three keys to parenting for first time parents

There’s really nothing like seeing your child laugh or smile. No matter what mood I’m in, seeing Reilly that happy causes me to smile, giggle or laugh.

What makes him laugh is often something really simple, like lifting his blanket up and letting it fall on his head and pulling it off before he can catch it. He giggles every time. Sometimes he giggles so hard he just collapses on the floor.

I love seeing him happy, excited, learning new things. I can tell how happy he is by how content he is in his surroundings. Every parent wants a happy child. While it isn’t a magic formula, there are several things that contribute to a child’s happiness and well being. Read more >>

How to avoid a birthday party faux pas

Number 1: Ask most experts and they’ll tell you that one of the biggest faux pas today’s kids (and their parents) make involves the invites.

“If your written invitations are handed out at school, make sure that everyone in your class — or your group, or your team — receives one,” explains Peggy Post and Cindy Post Senning, Ed.D., in Emily Post’s The Guide to Good Manners for Kids.
Too often, school-age children pick and choose who to invite from a class, leaving many kids left out and with hurt feelings. It’s up to you — as the parent — to explain why this is unacceptable. Read more >>

Simplicity Parenting: Why Less Is More for Your Kids

Family counselor, Waldorf educator and public school trainer Kim John Payne, M.Ed., says that when he would take on a new client, he’d often offer them a choice between a year of therapy, or having him spend just one day at their house.

“Many of today’s behavioral issues come from children having too much stuff and living a life that is too fast,” Payne says. “I would visit from breakfast to bedtime; I helped the parents simplify their routines and lives, and very often the parents [would] see an improvement in their child’s behavior within days.” Read more >>

Tips for taking control of kids’ weight issues

Guiding children on the right eating paths can help prevent adult obesity later on in life.

Many parents are having conflicts with their children, and they’re not over doing homework or cleaning their rooms. The disagreements are about food and how many of today’s youth need guidance about what they eat because of pronounced weight gain.

Research indicates that in the United States 1 out of 3 children is now classified as overweight or obese. With less time spent exercising and more time spent in front of the television or with gaming consoles, children are packing on the pounds.

Caring for toddler’s teeth takes time

Just because your toddler’s baby teeth will someday wind up with the tooth fairy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the time now to properly care for them.

Regular brushing is needed to help remove the build-up on teeth that results from sugars found in juice and many foods.

While fluoride can be an important and effective tool in the prevention of cavities, it can be a problem with toddlers who haven’t learned to spit out toothpaste. Excessive fluoride consumption can result in an unsightly spotting of the permanent teeth.
